Ridgways Ltd

This firm was established in the Bedford Works, Staffordshire Potteries, Hanley, in 1879, following on from other branches of the famous RIDGWAY firm on the same site.

Coloured Willow

The plate shown below is a handpainted version of the traditional WILLOW pattern, featuring dark blue, green, red and gold colouring on an orange transfer, a pattern sometimes known as Gaudy Willow.

Many of Ridgways patterns were used in the C20th by firms such as Booths and Woods, but this design stems right back to an 1832 engraving, as indicated by the backstamp (see photo), placing it in a direct line with the first use of the WILLOW pattern by English potteries in the early 1800s.
