Coloured WillowThe items shown below are handpainted versions of the traditional WILLOW pattern, featuring dark blue, green, red and gold colouring on an orange transfer, a pattern sometimes known as Gaudy Willow. Many of Ridgways patterns were used in the C20th by firms such as Booths and Woods, but this design stems right back to an 1832 engraving, as indicated by the backstamp (right), placing it in a direct line with the first use of the WILLOW pattern by English potteries in the early 1800s. The backstamp reads:
With the bow and arrow motif enclosing: "RIDGWAYS ENGLAND". |
